Calcium is a metal and is the fifth-most abundant of all elements in our bodies.
Calcium ions are electrolytes and play an essential role in the biochemical and physiological processes in our bodies. Inside our cells, they play a role in signal pathways, muscle cells, fertilization, and many enzymes.
Outside our cells, calcium ions are vital for bone formation and protein synthesis, as well as in the digestive and circulatory systems.
Sources of Calcium
Humans can get calcium from dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt. It’s also present in salmon, sardines, kale, spinach, soy products, and breakfast cereals that have been fortified.
Problems caused by a lack of calcium
If calcium levels are too low, people can suffer from dental problems, cataracts, osteoporosis (brittle bones), and brain problems.
Calcium deficiency usually is mild, but it often doesn’t cause symptoms. Without treatment, however, it can be fatal.
